A fire station was deployed to assist a team across the border.

Longtown Fire Station firefighters were mobilised to a house fire in Gretna yesterday evening (May 3) to support their Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) colleagues.

On arrival, the firefighters found a terraced house ablaze, while breathing apparatus crews from Gretna and Longtown were initially committed to fighting an extensive fire on the first floor of the property.

Additional SFRS crews were committed after the initial firefighting activities and the fire was brought under control.

When Longtown crews left, activities were still ongoing and an aerial ladder platform was on site to check the roof.

The on-call fire station has seen a busy few days earlier this week, as just two days prior they responded to a fatal crash in Westlinton, south of Longtown on Brampton Road.

A spokesperson from the fire station said on this: "Despite the efforts of all the emergency services it has been announced by Cumbria Police that a single male occupant died at the scene.

"The crew extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the individual who lost his life."
