A YOUNG man has appeared before a Carlisle court accused of two burglaries, a theft and an assault causing actual bodily harm.

A defence lawyer representing Michael Ball told magistrates at the city’s Rickergate court that the 25-year-old defendant intends to enter not guilty pleas to the four allegations he has been charged with.

The first alleged offence, outlined in full at court, was that he burgled a property in Victoria Place, Carlisle, on February 19, stealing a bracelet and a ring valued at £450.

This charge includes an allegation that a man who was living at the house in question was subjected to violence.

The second allegation is an alleged burglary at a house in Wigton Road, Carlisle, on May 1, when Ball is accused of stealing clothing. The defendant is also allegedly stole a house key belonging to the woman who lives at the Wigton Road property.

The final charge relates to an alleged assault on the same woman.

After a 20-minute hearing, during which defence lawyer Duncan Campbell confirmed that Ball would deny all the charges, magistrates sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court for a hearing on June 6.

In the meantime, Ball, of Stockwell Road, Durdar, Carlisle, was granted bail with the following conditions: he must live and sleep at that address; and he must not enter the two roads where he is alleged to have committed the burglaries; and he must have no contact with any prosecution witness.

The defendant will also be subjected to a 7pm to 7am daily curfew, which will be electronically monitored. it is likely that Ball will be asked to enter his pleas when he appears at Carlisle Crown Court next month.
