A HOMELESS 30-year-old man has admitted intentionally wounding a man in Carlisle, leaving the victim so badly injured he spent two weeks in intensive care unit.
During a brief hearing at the city’s crown court, Vitalijus Gerve entered a guilty plea to a charge of maliciously wounding the man with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm at a house in Carlisle on May 2.
The victim is understood to have needed a tracheotomy as a result of the serious injuries he sustained during the attack.
Defence lawyer Andrew Gurney told Judge Nicholas Barker the defendant should be sentenced after the preparation of a background report.
The judge accepted that request, telling the defendant: “Vitalijus Gerve, you have pleaded guilty to this charge of assault and I have ordered the Probation Service to prepare a report about you.”
The judge said that Gerve, who iistened to the hearing with the help of a Lithuanian interpreter, will be sentenced at the crown court on May 27. In the meantime, he will remain remanded in custody.
