Kirkland Church of England school launch new initiative

Kirkland C of E Academy in the town ran a community gardening day last Sunday, April 24 inviting parents and members of the community to the school garden, to kickstart the new project.

Katie Robinson, head of school, said: "It was great to see everyone coming together with the common aim of making the garden even better for the children of Kirkland Academy.

"We're incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed, whether it be with their time or materials. We can't wait to see the end result.

"Some of the children have been working together in class on designs for the garden project, including working out a budget and writing letters asking for donations.

"They are committed to making it accessible for all and are eager to plant more flowers, grow more vegetables and create a 'Zen Den'; a quiet space for reading, prayer, reflection and meditation.

"It was really exciting for them to see their ideas coming to life and be a part of it. They are learning valuable life skills that will stay with them as they grow up."

Sisters, Kitty and Elizabeth McLaughlin are enthusiastic about the garden project and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Elizabeth said: "I can't wait to cook again with the vegetables we grow, we once made carrot cake with our own carrots."

Kitty said: "I'm excited for the Zen Den to be finished, I will go in it at playtimes."

The gardening club will continue throughout the summer term with the next big event taking place in May; The Big Plant with 'Get Cumbria Buzzing' which supports action for pollinators across the region.
