'Marathon Man' Gary McKee has smashed his own record of 110 consecutive marathons as he hits Day 111 of his Three Six Five Challenge.

The dad-of-three set off  on his challenge to run a marathon every day this year on January 1, in honour of his late dad and to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Gary, 52, was cheered on by his wife Sue and three children, Alfie, Beau and Minnie along with well-wishers and supporters from Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support to celebrate going one beyond his previous record.

He has so far raised around £84,000 from running through the trails around his hometown of Cleator Moor between 8am and 12 noon every day.

Speaking to the News & Star after his 111th marathon, Gary said: “I never see it as a record. I just see it as another day. Tomorrow will be another day.

"I feel extremely strong. Stronger than I have done in the past. I have always focused on the finish.

"My legs are getting massaged every day. My mindset is I'm almost a third of the way through.

"I draw my inspiration from people who are going through the cancer battles and I always think about the people whose names are on my chest, who I'm running for that day.

"I also draw inspiration from the fantastic work that Macmillan and Hospice at Home do, looking after our loved ones in their darkest times. You've got to be a special person to be able to deliver those services."
Gary said the community support had been "fantastic".

"Everybody gets behind you and wants you to be successful," he said. "People are proud of what I'm doing. We live in a small community that has always been very giving and generous."

Gary was joined on his 111th run by Matthew Welsh and Tracey Kennett, of Robinson & Co, who also ran a marathon with him and were his sponsor for the day.

Ellie Mcmillan, communications co-ordinator for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said “Here at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, we are all in total awe of Gary’s commitment, dedication, and strength throughout his current 365 marathon challenge.

“As we approach Day 111, we reflect on Gary entering a new milestone, as we celebrate Gary running one more marathon, than his 110-marathon challenge last year.

“The money Gary is raising will make a huge difference to the people of West Cumbria, and we thank you for being our Cumbrian hero!”

Sue McDonald, Macmillan fundraising manager for Cumbria, said: “Gary’s achievement in reaching the 111-marathon mark will be truly extraordinary.

Gary has never faltered over his belief that he can do this, but we are very aware of what a massive physical and psychological commitment and achievement this will be.

“He embodies the Macmillan spirit of doing whatever it takes to make sure every person with cancer gets the help they need. The money Gary is raising will make a huge difference to how Macmillan is able to support people living with cancer and their families.”
