A popular fundraising cycling sportive in memory of two much-loved Cockermouth brothers takes place this weekend.

The Team Townend Challenge is held in Loweswater in memory of Christian and Niggy Townend, who were killed on their bikes in 2010.

Every year hundreds of cyclists set off from the village hall to remember the brothers, and raise money for RoadPeace, a charity which campaigns for road safety and justice for victims of road collisions.

Since 2010, the challenge has raised over £75,000.

Riders can choose from three routes; the Classic (22 miles, 2,361ft climbing), Challenge (40 miles, 4,582ft climbing) and Dirty Double (66 miles, 7,676ft climbing).

The courses were routes favoured by Christian and Niggy, who were both proficient cyclists.

News and Star:

All entrants are treated to a great selection of post-ride refreshments in the village hall, thanks to a hard-working team of volunteers.

In addition to the ride - which takes place on Saturday, this year organisers are hosting an evening event at Cockermouth Scout Hut with live music, DJ, raffle and charity auction.

Prizes include festival tickets, cycling jerseys and outdoor gear, with all proceeds going to RoadPeace.

News and Star: Harry Shepherd, who helps to organise the event, said: "The Team Townend Challenge is a special day for so many people, where we remember our friends and raise money for an important cause in RoadPeace.

"It's always a cracking event and there are still plenty of places available, so do get involved.

"Everyone is also welcome to our evening event at the Scout Hut, and there are some great prizes to be won.

"As always, huge thanks to the volunteers and supporters who make it happen, and all the businesses who have donated prizes."

People can sign up for the challenge online at teamtownend.org. Entry costs £27 and includes a choice of three routes, Team Townend water bottle, and a post-ride feast of tea and cakes.

Riders can also enter on the day, with entry costing £30. All of the rides begin at Loweswater Village Hall and riders can set off from 8am.

At the evening event, tickets are available on the door with a voluntary donation to RoadPeace. Doors open at 7.30pm with live music from 8pm.
