CUMBRIA County Council is set to make £5 million worth of improvements to the Greyhound Inn, Torpenhow junction, on the A595.

Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) has prioritised the construction of the first phase of the Torpenhow junction, providing £5million of funding from its ‘Getting Building Fund’ to ensure that this important road scheme could move forward.

The works are being carried out are part of a wider strategy to improve A595 project at Bothel, with residents being invited to attend a drop-in session on April 27, at the Greyhound Inn, to find out more about the project.

Angela Jones, Executive Director, Economy and Infrastructure, said: "The A595 is important for connectivity between Carlisle and West Cumbria, and I am pleased progress is being made with construction work starting soon on improvements to Torpenhow Junction at Bothel.

We asked our readers what they thought about the new road improvements and here is what they had to say:

Giles Dyche thinks the money could be better spent elsewhere, he said: "It would be a better idea to sort out all the potholes first."

Nic Barnes poked fun at the plans, playing on the east/ west rivalry, he commented: "It would be a better idea to spend the money building a walled defence stopping the west Cumbrians travelling to the far superior east."

Sylvia Bulman welcomed the plans that she has waited for over decades, she said: "Oh really been saying that for decades Its a dangerous rd ! Loss of industry in the west meant nothing was done."

Chris Herrington commented: "The road is going to be landscaped to look like a 70 mph road with a 50mph speed limit

"The bend in the road entering the village will be opened up so instead of people having to slow to enter the village cars will easily exceed 80mph."
