Over the weekend, across the county, Cumbria's Fire and Rescue service have been washing cars in aid of Ukraine.

The charity car wash for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian appeal has so far raised £4,515 to provide some relief to the on-going crisis - raising over a quadruple of the initial £1000 target.

Whilst the car wash was free, patrons were being asked to make a donation in aid of the on-going crisis.

Paul Milburn, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s station manager and charity liaison lead, said: "The people of Ukraine continue to be in our thoughts during this time. 

"We stand in solidarity as we do whatever we can to support all those affected by the devastating and tragic events that continue to unfold.

"Please come down to your local fire station events to get your car cleaned while supporting the Ukrainian people and communities. All donations will be welcomed," he said.

Appleby Fire Station raised £1,220 with their efforts; Penrith with £310; Kendal with £151; Patterdale with £520; Sedbergh Station raising £972 and with Carlisle East and West Fire Stations adding another £882 to the pot. 

A spokesperson from Carlisle East Fire Station said: "We’d once again like to thank our communities for supporting us, and their generosity in donating such a fantastic amount. 

"The money will go towards helping those who need it most. Thank you," they said.

Alongside getting cars squeaky clean, teams were also offering a tyre safety check and were on-hand to answer any questions regarding smoke alarms or fire prevention at home. 

Donations are set to keep on coming as some fire stations collections have still be added to the count and this Saturday, April 9, Maryport and Millom Fire Station will be commencing their charity wash.
