AN ENERGY giant has expressed an interest in rolling-out a fleet of mini nuclear reactors across the UK and a senior councillor hopes the company sees Copeland’s industry credentials.

American nuclear developer, Last Energy, which is backed by a venture fund linked to  eccentric Space X mastermind Elon Musk, is planning a roll-out of small nuclear power plants across the country.

Government officials reportedly met with the firm last week to discuss their plans, the news comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepares to unveil his energy strategy this week.

The plans for sustainable energy production are expected to go provide a commitment to new nuclear for clean energy.

Moorside, a site neighbouring Sellafield, is the focus of a number of ambitions for the borough’s industry and nuclear skills.

Small Modular Reactors and/or Advanced Modular Reactors could be seen at the site if Copeland Borough Council and MP Trudy Harrison get their way.

Copeland has also submitted a bid to host the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s fusion reactor. Moorside has reached the final five in UKAE’s siting competition.

Reacting to Last Energy’s plans, Copeland Borough Councillor David Moore, said: “It’s not a conversation we’ve had yet but we’re always open to talk to whoever’s out there.”

The nuclear and corporate services portfolio holder said that headlines on the Government’s commitment to clean energy have made for positive reading.

“I think people have recognised that it’s on the Government agenda now, we’re getting announcements almost on a daily basis. We’re optimistic that we’re on the forefront of this.”

Councillor Moore hopes that Last Energy sees Copeland’s credentials in the nuclear sector when drawing up plans for new nuclear reactors.

“Hopefully they’ve seen our nuclear prospectus that was the idea of the nuclear prospectus, to see what our vision and ambitions in Copeland are.”

A meeting is set to take place in mid-April between those with a vested interest in new nuclear at Moorside.

The meeting will bring together: Copeland Council, representatives of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; MP Trudy Harrison and Rolls Royce SMR CEO Tom Samson.

Cllr Moore said: “Getting the BEIS officials in the same in the room is very positive because we’re trying to get this message in the heart of Government.”
