Carlisle Cathedral

News and Star:

Carlisle Cathedral is one of the jewels of North West England and home to the most beautiful ceiling of all the cathedrals.

We are open 365 days a year with FREE entry and sit within our own precinct in the heart of Carlisle city centre, walking distance from Carlisle Castle, Tullie House Museum, Carlisle town centre and train station.

We may not be the best-known mediaeval cathedral in England, we certainly are not the biggest, but after standing on the border with Scotland for nine centuries, we most definitely have a lively story to tell.

We hope you will come to visit us and enjoy the beauty of the cathedral and its precinct – with its refurbished Fratry and eye-catching new cafe.

Come discover 900 years of history as we celebrate a year of worship, events, concerts, exhibitions and more, during this historic year for Carlisle Cathedral as we celebrate our 900th anniversary in 2022.

Wordsworth Trust

News and Star:

For the first time ever, the manuscript of William Wordsworth’s poem ‘I wandered lonely as a Cloud’ is on display at Wordsworth Grasmere.

The poem reimagines the experience William shared with Dorothy in 1802, one she also captured in her journal. The manuscript and journal can be viewed side-by-side in the current exhibition ‘Dorothy: Writer, Sister, Friend’.

Today in Dove Cottage, visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of the past before emerging into the Garden-Orchard, a special place where William and Dorothy would walk, talk, write and relax in nature.

In the Museum, follow the incredible story of the Wordsworths through journals, letters and objects and enjoy a selection of fun activities for all ages. Also onsite is a café, viewing station, woodland walks and temporary exhibitions – so there’s plenty to make a full day of your visit.
