WIGTON’S John Peel Theatre will once again host their monthly hybrid open mic evening this month.

The Station Road venue were forced to rethink how to engage with audiences during the pandemic and started to hold their open mic events through the power of Zoom, with guests performing the material through the online meeting application.

As restrictions have eased, the group have returned to the theatre to host the evenings with tickets for the night available, however people can still join in, as a performer or an audience member, through the comfort of their own home.

The next virtual open mic night does take place tomorrow (Friday, April 1), but you might just be in time to get your submission in.

Kate Jenson from the theatre said: “You don’t have to contribute to watch, and you can just drop in at any stage. You don’t even need to be on camera — you can lurk on the side lines and just be a spectator.”

The evenings are also filmed and uploaded for people to watch on YouTube. Some clips have even reached thousands of views.

Kate continued: “She continued: “In case you haven’t seen it yet, our version of The Fairytale of New York, which to date, has had more than 7,000 views. To any of our members who haven’t joined a virtual open mic yet, give it a try — it’s not dangerous.”

Entrance for the night, which starts at 7pm is free for non-performers and tickets are available through Ticket Source.
