WHAT do a skater, an alpaca and a Clydesdale horse have in common?

The answer is that they can all be champions, as these photographs from our archives show.

We included David King from Carlisle and Stacey Kemp from Preston in another nostalgia page not too long ago, but that does not mean we cannot celebrate the couple again.

The skaters were eight-times British champions and represented the nation at the Sochi Olympics gaining a very credible 13th place.

We are also featuring British Thai boxing champion Chris Steson – not for his sporting achievements this time round – but because of this lovely photo of him and his bride Nicola Frampton.

There is an Olympic gold medallist featured in the pages as well

It is almost impossible to tell – especially in real life when they whizz past so quickly – but the photo of participants in the Tour of Britain features some household names, including Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins.

We have two champions for the price of one in our photo from Millom and Broughton Show in 2010.

Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling legend Billy Bland, who won five times at Grasmere Sports, was there to present 12-stone champion Andrew Carlisle with his championship belt.

While this is a celebration of some remarkable human beings, we also feature some other stars in our line-up of champions – the animals.

The beautiful Clydesdale, Auchengeree Ted, with owner Matthew Burks was Champion of Champions at the 2014 Cumberland Show. Such a gorgeous animal.

And what about the alpaca which was a champion from a long line of champions bred in Cumbria? The award-winning Blueberry Herd was raised by Jim and Mary Dent, pictured, on their farm at Little Acre, Newbiggin near Penrith. Since starting the herd in 2003, they have had many successes on the championship field.

And proud owners Elise and David Gillies from Carlisle, are featured with their winner of the Best Breed Border Terrier and Reserve Champion in the Cumbria Terrier Championships at Egremont Crab Fair.

The photograph was taken on September 21, 2013.
