VOLUNTEERS have got together to plant 200 trees.

The trees were planted at High Borrowdale in a misty and murky day by the friends of the Lake District.

200 trees were planted along the riverside and one of the volunteers also spread some birch and aspen seed he had collected.

Through the extensive work of volunteer days, the land is being transformed into a landscape haven for wildlife and people where over 10,000 native trees - ash, oak, rowan, holly, hawthorn, alder and willow have already been planted; enhancing the habitat and landscape and helping to stabilise soil and reduce erosion in the area.

Working with the Lake District National Park and their Farming in Protect Landscapes Scheme, in the next couple of weeks the group will be installing 340m of new fencing which will enable the group to create a new hedge.

The new hedge which will be planted on February 8, 2022, will create a new habitat, and will provide connectivity between the woodland areas and link them to hay meadows. It will also act as a wind break and a slow the flow feature for any surface water in times of high rainfall.
