A WIGTON man has been jailed for assaulting two police officers.

At Carlisle's Rickergate Magistrates' Court, Thomas Robert Miller, 27, of Greenacres, was jailed for a month after he admitted both assault offences, committed on December 11 last year in Wigton.

Explaining their reasons for jailing Miller, magistrates said that the offences were serious because of the defendant's previous criminal record and because at the time he was already on licence.

When released from jail, he must pay a £128 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

The sentence was a third longer than it otherwise would have been because the victims were emergency workers.

There was no compensation for the two officers because neither was injured.
