A MOTHER of two from Workington has been left 'frightened' after she awoke at the weekend to her porch crashing into her front garden.

Jess Newton, who live in Moorclose, with her husband and two children aged 8 and 5 was awoken on Saturday morning to a 'loud bang' in their home, on further inspection Jess realised her front porch had gone.

She said: "I know around my area there is quite a few (similar porches) and it's obviously not just going to be ours that isn't secured properly, so it is really dangerous for a lot of people who have a porch like this.

"It's frightened me a lot because I think what would have happened if my kids were walking out the door... it could of killed them and it could of caused me or my husband serious injury."

Jess is now calling on Castle and Coasts Housing Association, who she rents her home from, to take action so that incidents like this do not happen again.

She said: "I turned around and said what do I actually pay my rent for? I want my rent to mean that I have got safe roof above my head for me and my children, but I don't feel very safe at the moment because that collapsed and I don't know what else is going to."

"They need to take responsibility for this and they need to take everybody else's down and put a new one up."

The family waited eight hours for the Housing Association to move the remnants of the porch from her front door into the garden, after calling the emergency line.

David Elwood, Castles & Coasts Housing Association’s (CCHA) Head of Maintenance, said: “CCHA was first made aware of this incident on Saturday January 8 2022 and our contractor attended on the same day.

"Since then, we have been working closely with the affected residents and our contractors, to fully investigate what happened and how the incident was responded to.

"We will continue to liaise with the affected residents, to ensure that a satisfactory resolution is sought, as soon as possible. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this incident has caused.

“The health, safety and welfare of our residents is extremely important to CCHA and, following this incident, we have undertaken surveys to identify any other similar rain porches in the local area.

"Any affected residents will be contacted by CCHA, to discuss this further, and any work required to make sure these are safe, will be undertaken as a priority.”

Jess thanked Moorclose councillors Lynda Williams, Stephen Stoddart and David Farrer for their help over the weekend.
