LISTED buildings in Carlisle will be returned to their previous use as dwellings under plans submitted to the council.

Carlisle City Council has received an application for planning permission to restore 15-19 Portland Square and 5 Brunswick Street to residential dwellings.

The Grade II Listed buildings have been used most recently as office spaces.

Buildings one to five on Portland Square have already been converted to residential units.

If the city council approves the most recent plans for the square, 17 dwellings will be created in the listed buildings.

The applicant, Harrison Homes Limited has said: "The ethos throughout has been been to ensure the conversions are carried out in a manner which is respectful of the heritage of the buildings whilst ensuring that they perform in a more environmental manner and are attractive to the housing market."

Care has been taken in the design process to ensure the redevelopment will complement the square's history, whilst providing new dwellings attractive to buyers.

Harrison Homes said: "The design of the proposals to bring this empty set of terraces from office use to their original residential use has been carefully thought through to ensure that the historic interest of the buildings are retained and the visual appearance is enhanced whilst facilitating the use. Through the associated drawings and Historic Statement we consider that this has been demonstrated."

Landscaping works will be carried out to around the development.

"The existing paving will be taken up and a tegula laid to reflect the details on the north side of the Square. Low level walls will define the access to the parking area which will be controlled by an electric bollard. To the rear of the terrace, tegula will again be laid with some limited planting and areas of artificial turf for ease of maintenance."
