A community's church looks like it could be set to close.

Following an initial consultation, a recommendation for Holy Trinity Church on Wigton Road, Carlisle to close for worship was approved by the Bishop of Carlisle.

The proposed church closure has now gone before the Church Commissioners - allowing further opportunity for any interested parties to comment before a final decision is made.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Carlisle said: “The Parochial Church Council for Holy Trinity contacted us in very early Spring of this year, asking for help in exploring the closure of the church.

"[Parochial Church Council] members deemed it no longer financially sustainable to keep the building open."

The church will remain open for worship until the formal consultation process is complete and no decision has been made about the future use of the building yet.

The Diocese of Carlisle spokesperson added: "The potential closure of any church offers up a time for reflection and thanksgiving for all that the building and its worshipping community has brought to the local area.

"As a Diocese we give thanks for the faithful mission and ministry which has been so richly displayed over the years by the congregation of Holy Trinity.

"Our prayers are that this difficult process can continue to be managed as effectively as possible and that congregation members’ faith journeys continue to be fed through the richness of our worshipping communities."

The Diocese of Carlisle covers the county of Cumbria and is divided 11 deaneries - a group of parishes presided over by a dean - and then into 104 benefices, each with a serving vicar.

The Diocese is led by the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Rev James Newcome.
