RAIL passengers travelling through Flimby village will get a shot of festive spirit.

Children from Flimby School adopted the local railway station three

years ago and have been looking after it ever since.

This year the school held a competition for a Christmas banner to decorate the railings of the station.

Community Rail Partnership Officer Warren Birch, said: “This was a competition to come up with designs that feature both trains and Christmas, promoting rail travel over the festive period but also reminding people that they are still the station adopters for Flimby railway station.”

The eight foot banner with the winning entries has now been hung for all to see.

Flimby school adopted the station as part of a campaign to reduce the amount of vandalism there.

The school was approached by Northern Rail.

Head Tanya Peers said: “There was a lot of vandalism and anti-social behaviour at Flimby Station.

“We agreed that if the children got involved the community would get behind them and that might lead to less of this bad behaviour.”

The school, with the help of a Colourful North artist and students from Workington Academy also painted a large fence on the Flimby side of the station.
