A teenager who allegedly punched Danny Hodgson has indicated he will plead guilty over the attack that left the Cumbrian footballer critically injured.

A 15-year-old boy has appeared in Perth Children's Court to face a charge of grievous bodily harm.

Magistrate Wendy Hughes took an indicated plea of guilty to the charge, report WAToday and the West Australian.

The teenager will return to court next Thursday, December 9, to officially record his plea.

Reports in West Australia said there will be a discussion over when to sentence the boy.

Mrs Hughes said on Wednesday that if he wasn’t sentenced until midway through next year, Danny’s prognosis may improve and the sentence could be lighter.

WAToday report that both the defence and prosecution will have to agree on a date together, after receiving all the necessary medical records.

Danny, from Bigrigg near Egremont, was left in a critical condition after being attacked near a train station in Perth in early September.

The former Carlisle United youth team player was in an induced coma, and was in intensive care for 59 days.

After 89 days in Royal Perth Hospital, he was last week transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital to continue his rehabilitation.

His parents, Nicola and Peter, flew to Perth to be with their son and have spoken of their son's incredible fighting spirit.

Last week they added that Danny, a player with ECU Joondalup, must learn to swallow, drink, eat and eventually talk again, and that his physical rehabilitation would be "gruelling".

They also praised doctors who helped save their son, and said he was nicknamed 'Ironman' by intensive care medics.

They have expressed their gratitude for the support they have received both in Australia and back home, where a major fundraising drive has helped raise funds to help with Danny's recovery.

The 15-year-old charged with Danny's assault is also facing more than 20 charges over separate incidents, including unlawful wounding, common assault, assaulting a public officer, aggravated burglary and escape from lawful custody, which will be heard in court on January 15.
