The year 1986 will probably be remembered best for two disasters.
On January 28, the space shuttle Challenger exploded seconds after launch, killing the crew of seven astronauts. And in April, the world’s worst nuclear disaster took place in Chernobyl in the Soviet Union.
More positive news was that the UK and France announced plans to construct the Channel Tunnel and Europe’s largest indoor shopping centre, the MetroCentre, opened in Gateshead.
I986 was also the year the Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh. On the entertainment scene, The Phantom of the Opera opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and number ones included Chain Reaction by Diana Ross and The Lady in Red, by Chris de Burgh.
What are your memories of 1986?
