Helen Housby will bid to help England complete a series victory over Jamaica this weekend.

The Cumbrian netball star is in line to figure in the second and third tests for the Vitality Roses.

England chalked up a 55-45 win over the Sunshine Girls at London’s Copperbox Arena last Sunday.

They now head to Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena for a double header on Saturday and Sunday.

New South Wales Swifts star Housby, from Drumleaning near Wigton, returned to England action in the first test.

England’s attacking trio, also including Natalie Haythornthwaite and Jo Harten, were given a tough contest by Jamaica and head coach Jess Thirlby says the home side can improve.

“Whilst they are household names, they’ve not been around,” Thirlby told Sky Sports of some of her star players. “It just takes a while [to settle].

“To have to do that [find your flow] while playing against world-class opposition is difficult. Jamaica don’t ever let you win easily, so to come away with a 10-goal victory when we know that we haven’t really hit our straps is pretty impressive.”

Housby, speaking ahead of the series, noted the difficulty in taking on a side with Jamaica’s qualities.

The 26-year-old Carlisle-born player said: “A team like Jamaica are just so different to any other in the world’s top five.

“The way that they play, and their natural style, it’s just so different.

“Historically, England have met Jamaica at pretty much every major tournament, whether that’s during the group stages or in the knockout matches. So for us, getting as many minutes against them in preparation isn’t a bad thing.”

England and Housby are hoping to hit form ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

That will see the Roses defend the title they won so memorably on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018, when Housby delivered the last-gasp winning goal to secure gold for England.

“It’s gone quite slowly [since 2018] but then when I actually think about it, so much has happened following that moment,” the Cumbrian added.

“It is really exciting and to be able to go into this Commonwealth Games on home soil with the chance to defend a gold medal.

“That’s something that we - as an England side - have never done before and I know that the girls are up for it.”

Tomorrow’s second test is live on Sky Sports and streamed on YouTube at 3.45pm.
