As Copeland starts to recover after the arrival of Storm Arwen last weekend, we remember when the snow was well received in the past.

Thousands have been left without power after the storm took down trees and powerline.

Roads have been closed and still remain closed after six-foot show drift trapped people in cars on the A66. Police and other emergency services are continuing to warn people of the dangers.

The multi-agency response to storm Arwen continues as the county experiences further adverse weather and continued power outage.

Power cuts were experienced across Cumbria over the weekend, as highs wind hit the region, causing damage to the overhead electricity network, as well as falling trees blocking roads causing delays to engineers reaching equipment to make repairs. As temperatures fell below zero on Sunday, the county experienced an outbreak of snow.

We've searched through the archives and have found photos taken by our photographers and pictures submitted by readers over the years.

One of the most memorable occasions when heavy snowfall landed on West Cumbria was in February 1996, when people were forced to take shelter in Whitehaven’s Sports Centre after struggling to get home.

All routes in and out of Whitehaven were impassable and West Cumberland Hospital could not accept patients. At Sellafield, for the first time ever, at 6pm the management decided the wisest course of action was to have a controlled shut down.

It isn’t all doom and gloom whenever we start to see the snow falling, however. As the images in today’s nostalgia section shows, people of all ages and even animals spend time enjoying the wintry weather.
