ONE of the most established car garages in Carlisle has recently been bought over.

Caldew Electrical’s Matty Boak has purchased the former MGM Motors garage on Morton Street in the city’s Caldewgate area, bringing to a close one of the longest standing SAAB garages in the UK.

MGM Motors had worked on the site for over 30 years. Although the focus was on the Swedish vehicles, the company also provided MOTs and services for a range of makes and models.

Discussing why he decided to buy the premises, Matty said: “It’s quite an architectural garage and I really enjoy the way the building looks.

"It’s a smart looking property located in the old part of the city.

"The purchase means that we are saying goodbye to one of the longest running SAAB dealers in the country, it’s the end of an era.”

With the purchase, Mr Boak is planning on dividing the building into a number of different lots. He continued: “What I have proposed is for the building to be split into different properties, allowing for more business in the city.

"There’ll definitely be a premise for a company that will sell car parts.”

Planning permission for the building has already been approved and Matty is looking forward for work to finally begin. He said: “The work is due to start at the start of next month and I can’t wait.

"It should take around two to three months for the garage to be transformed into the new premises.

"The city will be saying goodbye to a piece of local history but I am looking forward to what the future holds for the premises.”
