A MAN has admitted briefly turning “psychotic” and threatening to kill a woman while armed with a knife.

But Dean Haughan told a jury any suggestion he falsely imprisoned the female at his Carlisle flat — or intended to commit a sex crime — was a “joke”.

Haughan, 31, is on trial. He admits an actual bodily harm assault on the woman, who was kicked and punched in and around his Hartington Place bedsit on the night of May 12.

CCTV footage seen by jurors shows him approaching the woman with a knife behind his back as she lay prone and partially clothed on a landing.

Haughan — completely naked in some video clips — also admits making a threat to kill her, and assaulting a female friend he grabbed by the hair and ejected from his room.

He denies falsely imprisoning the other woman — who suffered a facial injury, a dislocated knee and bruises across her body — and denies committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Giving evidence, Haughan said the women came to see him that evening despite his landlord not allowing visitors.

They drank alcohol, shared cocaine and the mood was ”jolly” until a “threesome” suggestion caused a row. He threw the friend out, he said, after she punched his television and broke a cup.

She cared little for her pal who, Haughan recalled, made the comment: “I will stay.”

After she began play-fighting, he responded with a “jab on the chin” which he said bust her lip. After he apologised, she began kissing, fondling and made a sexual suggestion.

She then ran out of the room, believing she’d heard a bang and, Haughan said, “fell on to her knee”.

He was shocked, he said, to see her lying on the landing because it was in sight of a camera.

“I went psychotic (and thought) I’m going to stab her,” he said. “I changed my mind, thought ‘what am I doing?’.”

He added: “I’m shocked, I was gutted when I saw the video.”

Haughan admitted taking the woman’s legs, pulling her into his room and later punching her. They cuddled and she repeated her intention to stay. He next recalled waking in the morning.

“I did not falsely imprison her at any point during that night,” insisted Haughan. “The key was in the door. She could have run out or walked out at any time.

“I had no intentions of any sexual thing. It is an absolute joke,” he added.

The trial continues.
