A WOMAN saw a badly-injured female friend 'like a shell' inside in a blood-covered Carlisle bedsit after a late night beating by the occupant.

Jurors at the city’s crown court have watched Dean Haughan, 31, kicking his victim on a landing outside his room, where he also made a chilling kill threat while holding a knife to her head.

CCTV footage captured Haughan’s violence, which occurred in stages inside the Hartington Place property on the night of May 12.

He was completely naked at times, she grounded and partially clothed.

Haughan is on trial. He denies falsely imprisoning the woman and also committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Haughan admits causing actual bodily harm, making a threat to kill and assaulting her friend.

Both women went to his home just before midnight having earlier consumed alcohol. They drank more at Haughan’s bedsit, where all three took cocaine.

There was music on and the mood was initially good before Haughan and the woman’s friend began arguing.

Haughan grabbed her hair, warned her pal was 'not going anywhere' and shoving her out of the room.

The friend went home, slept and returned the next day with a man. They found the woman inside the bedsit, injured, with blood 'all over' the floor and bed.

“She was in some state,” the woman said of her friend, who was scrambling on clothes. “She was like a shell. It was like she wasn’t there.”

She asked Haughan: “What have you done to her?” He denied doing anything.

The woman was left in pain with injuries to her face, leg and bruising across her body.

She described waking up in Haughan’s bed in the morning.

“I’ve gone. Just blank,” she told police of memory loss. “I went in the house all right and then came out not all right. I can’t remember anything after half-past one.”

But she felt something was amiss. “I didn’t realise what. I started to move my mouth, realised there was something up with it. I went to stand and my knee has given up on me,” she added.

Asked whether she recalled any sexual activity, the woman replied: “No.”

The trial continues.
