A WEST Cumbrian amateur football club has been forced to close its pitch over the weekend due to the poor weather conditions.

Whitehaven Amateurs made the decision to close their pitch due to the heavy rainfall and flooding damaging the Astroturf.

The club said they were disappointed with the decision but they were unable to continue with the regular service of their sporting facility.

A spokesperson from Whitehaven AFC said: "Unfortunately the club will be closed all weekend with all training, matches and commercial bookings cancelled.

"Upon inspection of our Astroturf pitch our worst fears have been confirmed in that the heavy rainfall has damaged and lifted the playing surface making it unsafe and a trip hazard."

The club have said that they will be speaking with the maintenance team on Monday who run the club to see what can be done.

It is still unclear as to whether or not the pitch will be able to open in the following week.

They have thanked their visitors and supporters for their ongoing support.

Flooding and poor weather has affected a number of other businesses and facilities in the area.
