AN evening with legendary mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington will be held to raise funds for an outdoor education charity based near Keswick.

For over 40 years, the Lake District Calvert Trust has been facilitating safe, accessible and challenging outdoor activities for people with disabilities from their residential centre.

However, a substantial fall in bookings due to the pandemic has meant a serious drop in income.

The evening, at Rheged, near Penrith, will begin with a Mountain Art Auction, then John Innerdale MBE, co-patron with Chris of the Mountain Heritage Trust, will interview Chris on some of his many interesting adventures and stories.

Sir Chris, who lives near Caldbeck, led the first British expedition to reach the peak of the world’s tallest mountain.

His team, which included Doug Scott and Dougal Haston, scaled the notoriously difficult South West Face of Everest, reaching the summit successfully on September 24, 1975.

A Rheged spokesman said: "Their theme for the night is 'Making a Difference' which is what the Calvert Trust has done for over 40 years by challenging disability through outdoor adventure."

The event will be held on Friday, November 12, at 7.30pm.

Tables are also available for pre-event drinks and dinner with Chris and John. More details on Rheged's Facebook page.
