PET owners are outraged with a latest study which revealed that they could face fines of up to £20,000 and a possible jail sentence for not feeding their four-legged friends the correct diet.

A study found more pet owners are feeding their pets a vegan diet.

Cats need meat to survive as they can develop health problems if they are not getting the right nutrients, including taurine, Vitamins A and B, arginine and arachidonic acid.

Certain breeds of dogs will struggle on a plant-based diet because their short guts make it difficult to digest high-fibre foods.

While a vegan diet is not specifically banned, it falls upon owners to ensure their pet is getting the nutrients they need to lead a healthy life.

Willy Winka said: “I had to look and make sure it wasn’t April 1!

“What a load of rubbish who do they think will police what I feed my dog.

“My dog is well looked after walked, fed and groomed I don't need neighbours doing it for me thanks."

Moments of perplexity said: “Vets, concerned neighbours and/or RSPCA can report animals which are suffering due to neglect and these reports will be investigated.

“I would of thought this was fairly obvious, only a simpleton would think it means the police will be watching what you feed your dog.”

Dale Mcalpine Workington said: " Yet some nutcases want all humans to be vegan.

“Eat Biblically , eat more meat.”

Sandy shore said: “No bacon then – sad”

Mr Nogs said: “Cats and Dogs are all meat eaters! If they want vegetables then feed them Chicken! Oh and by the way Cats have to be fed meat in their diet or it will kill them.”

Norman G said: “Dreadful and what about equal rights! We have those eco idiots and the vegan eulogy rubbish and yet cats get a free pass! If meat is ok for cats it is ok for us."
