Readers have been responding to a planning application for more than 150 new homes which has been recommended for approval.

A report from the Carlisle City Council Planning Committee has recommended that the planning application for 156 new homes on land at Orton Road be approved, with conditions.

The approval would be subject to the completion of a S106 agreement to secure a number of financial contributions among other things.

These include a contribution of £45,000 to support the "off-site improvement of existing play area provision", £33,327 to support the off-site improvement of existing sports pitches, and a contribution of £554,158 to Cumbria County Council towards secondary education provision.

Story Homes, who brought forward the proposal for the new homes, hope the development will make an "important contribution towards housing delivery, including provision of affordable homes, bungalows, and an element of accessible and adaptable homes".

The development would contain 13 different house types and these would include terrace, semi-detached and detached properties, with some bungalows also being provided.

In total there would be 25 two-bed properties; 49 three-bed properties; 73 four-bed properties; and nine five-bed properties.

Of these 46 would be affordable dwellings, including six affordable bungalows.

A number of issues were raised by some residents, including concern over the future of biodiversity in the area and that "too many dwellings are proposed".

Here is what the readers had to say.

Eelyn Oliver said: "We are ruining this island by allowing uncontrolled population growth and building on more land.

"Farms and cities have ruined England's wildlife and wilderness."

Claire Oliver said: "They need new schools and doctors surgeries.

"Not enough room in schools for all the extra kids."

Paul Hal Irving said: "We've had a major warning about the environment we need to be re foresting not building more and more on green land.

"There are plenty of places within the city to provide space for building without further messing with nature and habitats."

David James said: "We need the southern by-pass built before more housing is constructed.

"Traffic is bad enough already with through traffic from the south needing to go through the city centre to head out west."

Nic Barnes said the idea is good: "Plenty of people arriving in this country every day and they have nowhere to live."
