A well known, local, doctor successfully completed the London Marathon on the 3rd October.

Dr Raghu Vedapanakal GP, who works at Flatt Walks Surgery in Whitehaven, completed it to promote fitness and health amongst his colleagues and patients.

Raghu trains with Cockermouth based Derwent AC Running Club twice a week and also does regular yoga and cycling.

Dr Vedapanakal said: "It was one of the best experiences of my life - the crowd, music & how very well organised it was to run the London streets & yes the sun stayed out too to welcome us. I finished in 3 hours 56 minutes for full marathon.

"This was my 2nd marathon – having completed Windermere marathon earlier this year in 4 hrs 36 minutes.

"Though I was selected in ballot for London marathon, the ballot carries 4 % chance of qualifying on applying, still I managed to raise £980 for Alzheimer’s society & Alzheimer’s research charities.

Raghu took a rather unique means of fundraising by cooking lots of amazing food for fellow staff at the surgery, who in turn donated.

He cooked forty portions of chicken Biriyani and chicken curry along with vegetarian options.

Dr Vedapanakal said: " I was thinking of each and every one of my colleagues, friends and family members throughout the 26 mile run. My challenge is to participate in different marathons across the world in future and aim to get more of our colleagues involved in fitness activities.

"If I can run a full marathons after starting to run only 2 years ago from scratch, I am sure this would inspire many of you out there too.

"Staying fit involves devoting some quality time regularly for health & wellbeing.

"It is very important to look after our own health and be role models for our patients, family and friends.
