A YOUTUBE sensation is helping his followers learn a range of Cumbrian phrases.

Seong-Jae Kong, known as Korean Billy to his audiences, has 118,000 subscribers and has created 249 videos for his channel, all of which focus on the slang words used in specific areas of the UK.

From ‘why aye man’, to ‘ey up’ in Yorkshire and the Dundonian favourite, ‘eh’ll hae twa bridies and an ingin een an ah’, the creator has spent over five years posting videos highlighting unique quotes from the four corners of the British Isles.

The 30-year-old became interested in 'the various British dialects' while studying at the University of Central Lancashire.

Now based in Seoul, Kong said: “I haven't been to Cumbria yet. I used to live in Preston, Lancashire in 2015 when I was an exchange student, but I couldn't make it to Cumbria, which is a shame! I'd definitely love to visit Cumbria next time I visit the UK.”

This week, he posted a video where people can learn phrases used by Cumbrians. Billy describes what ‘fettle’, ‘marra’, ‘razzie’ are, as well as what people mean when they are ‘gan yam’.

Discussing how hard it was to learn the phrases, he said: “It was still tricky but not too difficult for me. That's because I've already learnt and covered a variety of dialects in northern England such as Scouse and Geordie, so even the Cumbrian dialect sounded a bit familiar to me!”

The creator said that the way he gets to learn all these phrases is simply by asking for people in a certain area to provide different phrases that he then uses to create the five-minute videos.

When asked if he wants to continue making the videos, he said: “I've been making videos over 5 years, and even though I've made a lot of videos about the UK, particularly about the UK dialects, there're still many regions and places I haven't covered yet.

"And I can see people asking me to cover their own region as well, so I think I will continue my journey. Also, as I'm very interested in British culture, I'd be happy to make more videos about it.”
