A local MP will be hosting an event to help promote Cumbrian businesses in other areas of the country.

John Stevenson MP for Carlisle is involved with this along with Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen.

The meeting will be held at Carlisle Golf Club, 8am for 8.30am on Friday 22nd October.

Mr Stevenson said: "I am a huge advocate of devolution and the positives of having an elected Mayor.

"They would work alongside us to champion our area and bring investment into infrastructure and the wider economy.

"For many people, Ben needs no introduction.

"Not only is he an accomplished speaker but he has a proven track record of bringing positive change for the Teesside area since being elected in May 2017.

"I am sure many Cumbrian businesses would enjoy listening to Ben and make the most of the opportunity to ask questions in a less formal setting."

Cumbria approaches a local government reform in less than a year which could potentially be followed by a devolution deal and the election of a Mayor.

The devolution in Cumbria refers to the plans to abolish the six borough councils and replace them with two unitary councils.

John Stevenson and many other MPs are in favour of these plans whilst others stand against them.

Gareth Ellis, Conservative MP for Belah and Kingmoor, said: "There are a great number of jobs in Cumbria and Carlisle is booming.

"I think devolution would be great for the area and we've seen the benefits it's had on Teeside and other areas.

"I think that having an Elected Mayor would be a good thing for the county.

"Hopefully these plans will push rail and road improvements along with the nuclear industry on the west coast.

"I think we have a lot to learn from Ben and I hope he can teach us as we progress with our devolution journey. "
