IAN Bell of Aigle Gill Farm near Aspatria has been awarded the Blamire Medal for services to agriculture in the old county of Cumberland.

The medal was presented by Trustee of the Blamire Awards, Ian Powley at the AGM of Aspatria Farmers Ltd at Aspatria Rugby Club.

Mr Powley said that Mr Bell had not only been a popular leading farmer in his own right, running a very successful dairy farm but had been instrumental in other organisations such as The Ayrshire Cattle Society, Aspatria Young Farmers and the NFU.

His most outstanding achievement however was his involvement with Aspatria Farmers Ltd, he joined the board in 1985 and took over as Chairman in 1996 a post which he retained until his retirement in 2019. During his time on the board he had seen the fortunes of the cooperative and it’s members wax and wane but he always tried to work to his mantle ‘ to supply good products at a reasonable price for the benefit of the members’. Ian was made the organisation’s Life President on his retirement.

On receiving the award Ian said he was greatly honoured indeed but wished to record his thanks to his family, the staff and fellow directors of Aspatria Farmers Ltd without whose help his success would not have been possible.
