RAIL operator Northern is giving people the chance to travel on its network for just £1.

As part of a "flash sale", the operator is making more than a million advance purchase tickets available from today for a mere pound.

In addition, kids travel half price, so younger customers can enjoy trips out for just 50p.

Tickets can be bought in advance from Tuesday, August 24, while all travel must take place between September 6 and October 22.

The £1 tickets are available when booked in advance through the Northern website or app. Northern say that no discount codes are needed - just search for a journey and, if it’s on one of the Advance Purchase routes, and tickets are available, the reduced rate will be presented.

Mark Powles, Northern’s customer and commercial director, said: “The past 18 months have been tough for all and, as things begin to return to normal, we wanted to give our customers the chance to explore all the North has to offer for the best possible value.

“It also gives our customers the chance to see, first-hand, the palpable improvements we’ve made while they’ve been away.

"Our trains, stations and ticket buying options have never been better and, together with our staff, we are ready to help people across the North to Go Do Your Thing.”

Over the past 18 months, Northern said it has introduced 101 new trains, completed the refurbishment of its older trains, delivered millions of pounds worth of improvements at stations - including the installation of more than 600 ticket machines - and improved accessibility features.

With regards to Covid, Northern has more than 600 dedicated cleaning staff working on trains and at stations with "a particular focus on touch points" (such as tables, buttons, and toilets).

The operator is also asking customers to to continue wearing face coverings on trains and at stations if they are able.
