A local man has built a full to scale model of a Spitfire plain in his back garden.

David Price, from Cotehill near Carlisle, started to build the replica three years ago in 2018 and in the next few weeks it will be nearing completion.

David has been passionate about historic aircrafts for decades and decided to take his love for them to the next step by building this incredibly realistic model.

Mr.Price said: “I gave up my painting business three years ago and decided to take up some new hobbies.

“I’m also an author and have written a book about a Lancashire Spitfire plane so I got the idea to build one for myself.

“I used to build model planes when I was a kid and it was something that I’d always enjoyed.”

David got involved with the Solway Aviation Museum in 1992 which is based at Carlisle Airport.

Where he would work on and paint the planes has this was his trade at the time.

He told us that this is where he learned the practical side of how the Spitfires work and how they are constructed.

The plane is made out of fibre glass and plywood which makes it very delicate.

However, this does not mean that it has not taken an immense amount of hard work and dedication to get the plane to its final stage of completion.

David estimates that he will have spent an astonishing 3000 hours to have got it to the near perfect replica that it is today.

Because of the rather fragile structure of the model it is essential that it be kept inside to avoid any deterioration.

Mr Price said: “I am hoping to sell the replica to the right buyer.

“It would be nice if a museum would be able to put it on display.”

David hinted that he would like to see it in a small, independent, museum like the Solway Aviation because of his close connection to it.

Because real Spitfire planes would be so costly for smaller museums to purchase a model version provides a more affordable alternative.

For some background knowledge, a real Spitfire plane could sell for around one million pounds.

Whilst David’s replica could be bought for only a couple of thousand pound.

Yet still it would provide museum visitors with a valuable insight into historical aircrafts.

So far David's spitfire has received lots of publicity even on a national level.

David's book, The Crew: The Story of a Lancaster Bomber Crew is available to buy now.

The book highlights his love for war and aircraft history.
