COCKERMOUTH Civic Trust has produced and distributed a leaflet about the town's market history.

The town recently celebrated the 800th anniversary of its first Royal Market Charter from King Henry III.

Trust chairman Phil Campbell said that, as part of the celebrations: "It was agreed to produce a leaflet explaining the history of our market for distribution to all households in Cockermouth and Papcastle.

"Over the centuries since 1221, the market has been a key part of life in the town, serving local farmers and producers as well as the residents of the town."

He set about researching and writing the text.

A grant to part fund the printing was obtained from the Metalcraft Ltd Community Fund through the town council.

Around 4,000 were printed and have been distributed by trust members. Copies are available at Cockermouth Library and TIC.
