The owner of a site which has been mooted to house a new holiday site and shop has vowed that the scheme has not fallen through.

The plans for a new complex in Drigg were submitted to Copeland Borough Council previously but were subsequently withdrawn.

Shelley Usher, who owns the site with her husband, remained in resolute tone.

“This is a temporary withdrawal. It was on the suggestion of the planning department because we wanted to make the lane that adjacent to the land a one-way system so there was no conflict of traffic on the site. However, we couldn’t get permission from the landowner.

“Essentially, we were told we would not get planning permission to exit onto the lane so we have had to go back and revise the plan.”

Mrs Usher is seeking to address concerns from local residents and is confident the scheme can make a large impact for the wider area.

“There were valid complaints from some local people but they have been looked at with the relevant departments and we feel confident that we have resolved a lot of the issues.”

In terms of concerns that have been raised around increased traffic, Mrs Usher has reassured local residents that the utmost will be done to ensure that vehicles are given specific places for parking on site.

She stated: “We’ve explained that when people are booking, they will be allocated a parking space. So visitors won’t be left waiting out on the road to check-in. They will come straight to their parking space and check-in from there.

“We are in conversation with Highways England and they’re happy to discuss things with us. We’re hoping to resubmit something next week!

“So, we’re really excited. Drigg is a hidden jewel. Hopefully for the village and wider area, this can have a great impact.”
