Runners throughout Cumbria revelled as parkrun was back across the county this weekend.

The family friendly run returned to sites all across Cumbria after being halted last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Parkrunners have eagerly awaited the day when the run could return- with Saturday being a joy for many.

The events took place across the county, from Workington to Whinlatter participants came out for their first run back in over 18 months .

The parkrun at Whinlatter saw a 100 and 200 mile milestone for some runners, whilst aswell as a pair of honeymooners who received a bottle of wine to mark their special occasion.

Sonia Dryden, Event Director was thrilled to have everyone back together after the difficult year.

She said: “Saturday felt like a dream to be back with our fantastic team of volunteers for Whinlatter Forest parkrun. It was so amazing to see everyone after such a long break away caused by the pandemic.

“We were thrilled to have 92 people join us to run, jog or walk our route and all the smiling faces as they came through the finish line at the end made all the planning worthwhile.

“Our volunteer team coped so well with a new system in place to keep everyone safe throughout the event and I’d like to thank all of them for helping us relaunch at the weekend.

“We’re looking forward to being back at Whinlatter every Saturday at 9am.”

Elsewhere, in Workington Parkrunners also donned their trainers once more to take park in Saturday first run back.

A spokesman for Workington Parkrun, said: “It was an amazing turn out this morning, and we were joined by some brand new parkrunners and tourists from Burnley and Liverpool

“All of us in the event team sincerely hope you enjoyed your first parkrun outing for a while - You all made the morning special.”
