Firefighters were called to tackle a suspected deliberate grass fire at a golf course in north Cumbria.

Two appliances from Carlisle West and Eastg fire stations were called at approximately 13.30 to put out a grass fire near the far north east end of Stony Holme Golf Course in Carlisle.

Firefighters were on hand to put out "several patches"of grass that are suspected to have been set on fire deliberately "by the river [Eden]". 

A spokesperson from Carlisle East Fire Station said:"Naked flames can easily set off a fire during a dry spell like this."

On social media, Carlisle East Fire Station posted: "Please also dispose of cigarettes responsibly during these long periods of dry weather, when the grass and foliage is tinder dry.

"Thanks to staff at Stoneyholme Golf Course for their assistance in dealing with the blaze."
