DO YOU ever wonder what's special about the city you live in?  Here are 10 things which put Carlisle on the map.

1) In a study commissioned by www.diys.com, Carlisle came out fifth in the UK in their list of most cultural towns per capita, and top in their museums and performing arts categories.  They found that in terms of museums, galleries, and other cultural attractions, Carlisle does very well for the amount of people that live there.

2) On that note, it would be remiss not to mention Tullie House, on Castle Street, located in a Grade One listed Jacobean building.  For local history, it’s unbeaten, with lots of Viking and Roman treasures, as well as a beautiful garden to wander and a café.

3) Carlisle Cathedral is another sight brimming with history.  Dating from 1122 and built by King Henry I, it has a beautiful stained glass window which still contains much of its original glass.

4) Lauren Smith is in Tokyo representing Team GB in badminton.  She has teamed up with Chloe Birch, a long-time partner she has won with at international level before to try and bring home some medals. 

5) Carlisle is also represented in Tokyo by hammer thrower Nick Miller.  He is the British record holder for the hammer throw and won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia, before coming second in the World Championships the same year.

6) Helen Skelton is best known for co-presenting the BBC programme Blue Peter, which she did for five years between 2008-2013.  She is also well-known for her bravery for taking on challenges such as walking a tightrope across Battersea Power Station, running a 78-mile ultra-marathon and using a bike to reach to South Pole.  No doubt something she learned from her Cumbrian upbringing.

7) With the border region to the north, and beautiful landscapes to the south, Carlisle is one of the most stunningly located cities in England, surrounded on all sides by fascinating places to explore.

8) Despite currently sitting below Barrow on alphabetical order, on the pitch Carlisle United F.C is the best football team in the county.  The club is sure to have one of the highest attendances in the league this season and it has the third biggest stadium out of the teams currently in the division.

9) Taking a 5.0 from Tripadvisor, Solway Aviation Museum is based at Carlisle Airport and hosts nine classic planes, one of which you can climb into the cockpit of.  With entertaining volunteers and exhibits in the main building discussing aviation history, it’s a reason to get up extra-early next time you’re off on holiday.

10) According to Numbeo, rent in Carlisle is 51% cheaper than Manchester, 77% lower than London and 40% lower than Glasgow.  Restaurant and other costs of living were similarly cheaper. 

With the surrounding countryside, cultural attractions and friendly people, are there many better places to live?
