READERS of the News & Star were optimistic about summer events organised for Whitehaven which it is hoped will give the town a boost.

This week we let readers know about a continental market which ran place throughout the weekend on Whitehaven’s promenade.

The event was organised by Whitehaven Town Council and Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners to give the town a boost and show visitors what it has to offer.

Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners’ chief executive John Baker said: “We’re delighted to be able to host this on the harbour.

“We would love to see as many people as we can enjoying what is on offer.

“It’s really important to have this in the town as it will be great for people to be able to get out and about and see what we have to offer.

Readers were optimistic about the impact of the continental market, and the programme of events planned for Whitehaven.

Bob Cullen said: “Continental cheese and a kangaroo burger, yes please”

Laird Lucan said: “It’s nice to see something of an event after the time we’ve endured.”

Our post asked residents of the town if they would attend the event and Pauline Smurthwaite said: “Definitely. I try to support Whitehaven any way I can.”

Esther Lydia answered: “Absolutely”

Chris Hayes said: “Of course.”

Anne-Marie Williamson said: “It’s a start but the town needs vastly improved upon, too many empty shops, weeds growing out of the pavements, paint peeling off buildings. Town centre looks tatty & dishevelled.”

Garry Foss said: “Diversify or die anything that brings people in spending money has got to be a good thing, if people aren’t spending you’re not selling the right goods.”

Pauline O’Reilly said: If fewer people didn’t shop online, more shops would be open, and it’s up to everyone to support their town centre.”
