Firefighters are battling a fire across multiple houses in a Carlisle residential street.

Cumbria police were called at 3.16pm to attend a building fire at a house on Linton Street.

It is understood there are about five fire engines in attendance from both Carlisle East and Carlisle West stations.

The fire has reportedly spread to neighbouring properties.

There are no reported injuries.

However, residents have been evacuated and cordons are in place while the fire is made safe.

A crowd has gathered around the area to watch fire crews tackle the blaze.

People on the ground have told of the gridlock to the nearby area the blaze has caused as well as commenting that it could be seen from the local school.

Carlisle East took to there twitter to say: "Our crews are currently in attendance at a large fire on Linton Street, Carlisle. There are currently 5 fire appliances and our ALP in attendance. The fire involves the roof space of approximately 5 terraced houses."

The fire is being fought by 10 breathing apparatus wearers using hosereels and main jets, and our Aerial Ladder Platform is being used to fight the fire from above."

One resident said the fire has been going on as long as 4 hours.

The public are being asked to avoid this area.
