THE June sale of Beef Shorthorns and native breeds at Longtown saw a nice entry of cattle in the ring and bidders lining the ringside from a wide area.
Topping the sale was a young, April 2020 born, Beef Shorthorn bull from J. F. Irving & Son, Montbenger, Yarrow, Mountbenger Paddy.
A roan poll bull of strong confirmation by Coldrochie Linton, he sold for 3,200gns. to Messrs Howatson, Gillenbie, Lockerbie.
The four bulls forward all sold to average £2,362.
Topping the female section was a 2017 cow with calf at foot, part of the Shawhill Shorthorns reduction sale from Annan, Dumfriesshire.
A roan poll cow, Shawhill Lillian by Burnside Elite with an April born bull calf at foot by the high growth index Shawhill Maestro, she went at 2,700gns to Messrs Morton, Lochend, Denny.
The same buyer gave 2,000gns. for Shawhill Lively, a Langalbuinoch Gallant daughter with April born heifer calf.
Other cows with calves from Shawhill went at 1,800gns. to Messrs Watret, Burnside, Annan and D. Steel, Lessonhall, Wigton and Messrs Morton took Limelane Kezia from T.A. & J. Swinbank, Brafferton, Darlington at the same 1,800gns. price.
Without a calf, but in-calf, 2014 born Galla Hayley Katrina from James Frame, Little Galla sold at 1,850gns. to D. Baillie, Calla, Carnwath. 12 cows, calved or in-calf averaged £1,675.
Twelve in-calf and maiden heifers averaged £1,250 with the poll Hyndford Newtown from Ian Tennant selling at 1,700gns. to Messrs Meadley, High Bewaldeth, Cockermouth.
In the commercial section, an exceptional consignment of 8 Galloway cross Beef Shorthorn heifers with Angus cross calves at foot from Borthwickshiels, Roberton attracted great admiration and sold to £1,950 to Ashcraig Farming Partnership with three others at £1,850.
Overall Native hill breed cows & heifers with calves at foot averaged £1,652 and more could readily have been sold.
