Forget Wimbledon Common, Wigton now has there very own clean up crew for the town.

This young Wombles have been on on a mission to help rid town of litter.

They now have the Wigton Wombles, who meet on a Wednesday, and this is a group of young children who are fighting the in the war against rubbish.

Each Wednesday children have slipped into their high visibility vests and hit the streets.

North Allerdale Development Trust have been helping the youngsters clean up the areas where they live and make it a nicer place for everyone.

Wigton Town Council have praised the work they’re all doing to help make the streets cleaner.

Clare Stabler NADT outreach development worker said: "The wombles are part of our early intervention programme, with everything that is going on some need a little extra support to build their confidence and learn to socialise again.

"It's an after school provision and some of the year five and six children are struggling to get beck to ‘normal‘ after being at home and having to take so many precautions.

"But, by getting them back out in their groups it is helping build their confidence and is also helping to clean the town up.

"What happens is they identify areas through the week that they think need cleaning up and we go and clean the area, when we get back after the clean up they tally up what they find and they're hoping to create a map of the town showing hotspots for litter."

The group head out each week, working closely with Thomlinson Junior School she said: "Our Wigton Womble group have focused on just one alley and the area at the old bus station and still came away with two full bags of rubbish. The weather wasn’t as kind, so a couple of games back at the workshop finished the session off nicely well done once again to all the Thomlinson Junior School children that took part."
