Carlisle United have made striker Tristan Abrahams their first new signing of the summer.

The former Leyton Orient and Newport County man has signed a two-year deal at Brunton Park.

It sees the Cumbrians end the wait for their first new face of the close-season after a recent spell of departures.

Abrahams, 22, has opted to leave Newport and turn down interest from other clubs in order to join Chris Beech’s squad.

The forward had been “in dialogue” with the south Welsh club, following the publication of their retained list, but has decided to move north.

Abrahams scored eight goals in 28 appearances for the Exiles, before a goalless 14-game loan spell at Leyton Orient when he was mostly limited to sub appearances.

The London-born player started out at Orient before earning a move to Norwich in 2017.

Amid two seasons at Carrow Road, he made further loan moves to Orient and Exeter, scoring against Carlisle for the latter on the opening day of the 2018/19 campaign.

After a further loan at Yeovil, Abrahams made a permanent switch to Newport in the summer of 2019.

His arrival adds an attacking body to Beech’s squad after the recent departure of Offrande Zanzala to Barrow and the return of loanee Joshua Kayode to Rotherham.

Attacking wide man Omari Patrick also last week left for Burton.

United are understood to be speaking to other targets in attack as well as other positions.

Beech welcomed the new signing.

Speaking about Abrahams on the club website, he said: “I’m delighted with this one.

"Tristan is a really exciting player, he fits the way we look to play and has those physical attributes of pace power and strength, plus he’s got goals in him with his technical abilities.

“We actually had our eyes on Tristan last year, but Newport decided they wanted to keep him in the building, and he went on to score a flurry of goals for them early in the season.

“He’s at a great age and there’s real scope to work with him and develop his game. On his day he’ll cause all sorts of problems for opposition defenders.

“He’s a quality player and really exciting to watch. I’ve no doubt our supporters will get right behind him and give him all the backing he needs to settle in and start scoring goals.”
