Last weekend, football fans in Cumbria and around the country rejoiced as England made a victorious start to the Euros for the first time.

Courtesy of a winner from Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling, the Three Lions emerged as 1-0 winners against Croatia at Wembley in London.

Many, however, will recall the last time England faced Croatia in the group stages of a major tournament back in 2004 when a young Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene to take Euro 2004 by storm and announce himself as an international superstar.

In a game that would ultimately book England's place in the knockout stages of that tournament, the Three Lions impressively dispatched of their opposition with a 4-2 victory.

A Wayne Rooney brace and goals from Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard ensured England would meet Portugal in the quarter-finals of Euro 2004, where they would meet their end.

It was a game littered with drama, with England even going behind in the sixth minute after Niko Kovac poked the ball home.

However, Scholes' close-range header drew England level and Rooney then arrowed a shot past keeper Tomislav Butina.

In the second half Rooney beat Butina with a cool finish and although Igor Tudor scored for Croatia, Lampard added a fourth with a run and a shot.

Closer to home, it was clearly a game that inspired that region. In today's gallery, we look back at life in and around the fixture in our area.
