Readers have been sharing their thoughts about the story following the objection to the Home Bargains shop that is being planned to open in Gateway 44 Retail Park in Carlisle.

The vision has met with opposition from The Lanes over concerns that the city's retail centre could shift as a result of this development.

The objection comes after a difficult year for the The Lanes which has seen key retailers Debenhams and H&M announced their departures.

Here is what you had to say.

Kerry Grant said: "Perhaps if rents and rates weren't so high in the city centre units, more businesses would stay in the centre of town.

"The lack of parking for stores that sell furniture items will always be an issue within Carlisle."

David Pitkeathly said: "Surely we don't need a B&M and a Home Bargains within 800 yards of each other.

"There already are two Costas in the small vicinity which seems crazy.

"There must surely be more variety on offer."

Kerry Nichols is supportive: "Having a bigger Home Bargains in Carlisle would be fantastic.

"I had to drive all the ay up to Penrith to pick up bits from there today, one closer would be easier."

Joanna Bainbridge said: "The old Debenhams unit would be big enough to house a huge Home Bargains.

"I'm against any development that takes footfall away from the high street.

"We need variety or the town centre is going to end up like Botchergate, full of takeaways and charity shops."
