Readers have been responding to a story following Cumbria’s struggling tourism sector.

Claims from Cumbria Tourism say that our tourism sector is in a crisis state because of Covid-19 travel regualtions, people moving on because of Covid, and the loss of migrant workers from the EU as a result of Brexit.

Here is what you had to say.

Several people mentioned low wages as being the main factor.

Euan Donald said: “Maybe they need to pay more than the minimum wage, because seemingly they can’t fill the jobs.

“I ain’t working for the minimum wage for a multi-millionaire campsite owner at Windermere when I can get twice as much in Carlisle."

Nick Graves questions: “I wonder how much is due to Brexit as cited as a factor.

“I would have thought that the Covid situation is by far the biggest factor.

“Can these workers actually get into the UK under current rules?

“Obviously we don't really need another variant being brought in.

“Presumably if these workers have been fully vaccinated then the situation may be different.”

Christopher McKay added: “Well, it would help if they give people a chance but so far all the roles I’ve applied for I’ll be lucky if 10% of them reply and if any of them reply with anything other than due to high demand you haven’t been successful or haven’t made the shortlist.”

“On top of that Cumbria is a big place and if you don’t have a driving licence it’s hard to get to some of the places where the jobs are, so you need to rely on unreliable public transport.”
