Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he considered subbing on Cumbrian penalty specialist Dean Henderson for Manchester United’s Europa League final shootout.

But the manager said he was "confident" in sticking with David de Gea.

The Red Devils lost 11-10 on penalties with de Gea failing to save any of the Spanish side's kicks in Gdansk.

The keeper's own penalty was then saved, as Unai Emery's side claimed the trophy after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra-time.

Solskjaer has faced questions on why he did not bring on Whitehaven's Henderson given his superior record at saving spot-kicks.

The Cumbrian has saved eight of the 17 penalties he has saved since 2016 - a period in which de Gea has saved none from 25.

Solskjaer admitted the idea had gone through his mind as he prepared for the game, but said he had faith in de Gea after picking the Spaniard to start the game.

"You go through every scenario, of course," said Solskjaer when asked about the subject in his post-match press conference.

"It had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game, but we were confident in David and we’d prepared.

"But anything can happen in a penalty shootout, so I stuck with the keeper who had played all of the game."

Man Utd lost out on spot-kicks after Edinson Cavani's goal had cancelled out Gerard Moreno's opener in normal time.

It proved an epic shoot-out which was eventally decided when Villareal keeper Gerónimo Rulli scored his sudden-death kick before saving from his opposite number.

Former Carlisle academy keeper Henderson, who was this week named in England's provisional Euro 2020 squad, has been fighting it out with de Gea for the No1 position this season.

The west Cumbrian earned a run of games in the Premier League and in total made 26 appearances in his first season of first-team football at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, are set to sign the experienced Tom Heaton to give them another goalkeeping option in 2021/22.

It has been widely reported that it is unlikely both de Gea and Henderson will still be at the club next season.
