Plans for an adult gaming centre in Carlisle have been withdrawn following months of opposition.

The applicant, who is listed as the Intervision, are based in Leicester and submitted plans for an adult gaming centre at 70-72 English Street in November.

The firm said their “mission” is to provide innovative and entertaining products for players that result in revenue growth for customers and that Carlisle had been identified as a location that they had earmarked to form part of a large expansion.

They stated: "We are presently looking at sites in the Midlands, the North and the South of England and hope to open five a year.

"This unit is sited centrally in Carlisle, and has access to local transport and amenities. Carlisle was chosen as there is/has been the residencies of William Hill, Coral, Gala, Ladbrokes."

Perhaps ominously, they also stated: "Unfortunately, due to the bad perception of gambling this has been difficult to obtain a site with the required planning permission."

Indeed, the prospect of an adult gaming arcade - whose owners want it to be open from 9am to 11pm, seven days a week - prompted unease.

Last November, a House of Lords report stated that gambling affected the lives of two million Britons, with an estimated 300,000 people addicted and families suffering as a result.

The panel behind the report concluded that they would recommend ministers to impose a levy on gambling operators to fund NHS addiction treatment.

Chartered Insurance Broker and Carlisle businessman Malcolm Ward had urged locals to object to the plan at te time and referred to the report from the Lords.

“It beggars belief that there’s a planning application before Carlisle City Council to turn 70-72 English St in Carlisle into a gaming machine arcade for adults,” said Mr Ward when the plan was first submitted.

"I can’t see why we should have a huge gambling arcade in the centre of our attractive city. It will drag down its image and be of no benefit to our city.”

He added: “Problem gambling can have huge repercussions. It can destroy whole families.”
